We Need Time Away To Help Us Breathe

I love camping

Camping is my escape.

We’ve been camping for over 15 years now. We started with a tent. It took 2 years before we made the move to a caravan. And we haven’t looked back!

Have you ever camped in a tent? With your wife and 3 young boys? You’d think that a 6-man tent would be big enough for everyone. It was, up to a point. But the feeling of stepping over each other is ever present.

And to top it all off, on one of our last camping trips in a tent, we spent the afternoon in the emergency room with the boys, all suffering from severe heat rashes. Spending time in a tent in 39C (100F+) weather will do that.

And that was the last straw.

The next time we camped, it was with our new 16" Jayco Expanda caravan. And it was the best decision we made.

Camping in a tent is an experience. A rite of passage. One I had growing up and one I wanted my boys to experience. But we needed to move past it or risk the boys associating their emergency room visit with camping. That would be a shame.

Today, those boys are all 21+ and doing their own thing. Too cool to come camping with mum and dad. And that’s fine. But we love it and take the van out 3–4 times a year, with the biggest stretch of 2 weeks…
